The McCarty Gang rued the day they ran into Ray Simpson on September 7, 1893.
They’d tried to rob a bank in Delta, Colorado—killed banker Andrew Trew Blachly—and were riding out of town. Simpson, who owned a hardware store—stepped out with a single shot Sharp’s rifle and shot Bill and Fred McCarty each in the head, killing both. He then took aim at Tom McCarty, more than 100 yards away and riding hard, and wounded the fleeing horse. Tom escaped.
McCarty later sent threatening notes to Simpson, but never followed through.
