The James-Younger Gang was fighting for its life on September 7, 1876.  The attempt to rob Northfield, MN’s First National Bank had gone awry and the citizens were fighting back.

Some had guns, but not all.  At least three men–Elias Hobbs, Truman Streeter and Ben Richardson–picked up rocks and threw them at Cole Younger and company.  Hobbs in particular screamed, “Stone ‘em! Stone ‘em!” It’s unclear if any of the rocks found their targets. But gunshots killed Clell Miller and Bill Stiles before the rest made their escape.
