This is a marvelous salute to the multitude of Texas sheriffs during the first half of the 20th century, and all the complimentary adjectives I can think of could be applied to this enlightening bit of history.
Thad Sitton gives us more interest and action per page here than many novels can offer. The attitudes and practices of these men while resolving every kind of scenario from moonshining to murder and from feeding hungry orphans to treating bleeding hemorrhoids made them unique in law enforcement. Every paragraph of this book is literally packed with entertaining and insightful episodes of the adventures and personal generosities of these badge toters who were definitely the top dogs in their counties. —Chuck Lewis
