What did drifting cowboys carry with them when they traveled?

If a drifter was going very far, he always took along a pack animal. For short trips, he might ride from ranch to ranch, arriving just in time for a meal. Ranchers always left out the latch string for travelers. As for clothes, he probably had only one change, which he rolled up in his bedroll. Personal items were toted in his “war sack.” He usually slept in his long-handled underwear, but on cold nights, he only removed his boots. One thing’s for sure, traveling by horseback with no hooligan wagon to carry the extra gear forced one to travel light.
