October 6, 1899.  Pat Garrett and two men went to the Bill Cox ranch in New Mexico to arrest an alleged killer.  The subject fought back and was shot to death in the ranch house. Cox’s wife, who was pregnant at the time, saw the fight and later miscarried the baby.  That angered her husband and her brother, Print Rhode, who threatened to kill Garrett on sight.
