Utilizing heated marks to brand property dates back to the ancient Egyptians. By the Middle Ages, most of the European continent, especially Spain, were using brands to mark cattle. Hernando Cortez introduced branding to the Americas in 1541. His cattle were branded with three crosses. Today there are thousands of registered brands in the U.S. and cowboys still pull calves to the branding fire, much like they have done for the past hundred years.
