So what caused Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday to split up—as friends and Vendetta Ride colleagues—in 1882?
In a 1940 letter, former New Mexico governor Miguel Otero suggested it was because Doc accused Earp of becoming a “Jew boy.” Earp was seeing a Jewish woman, Sarah Josephine Marcus, and staying with prominent Albuquerque businessman Henry Jaffa, who was also a Jew. Otero said Earp became angry with Holliday and left.
Wyatt reportedly had great respect for the Jewish faith, observing at least some of its customs and ultimately being buried in a Jewish cemetery.
