If you believe popular history and the movies, Wyatt Earp cleaned up outlaw-infested Cochise County at the O.K. Corral in 1881. If you are a fan of Texas John Slaughter you believe he cleaned up Cochise County after Earp left the state wanted for murder. In 1919 the Arizona Livestock Board reported that “Cochise County is swarming with outlaws.” So the answer to the question is—nobody cleaned up Cochise County. It’s still swarming with outlaws.
