Kansas Kan-Do

This past November, folks in Abilene, Kansas, fired up a 1919 Baldwin locomotive for an extremely short trip—about 120 feet and back—on the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad. The engine had not been used in more than 50 years.

In the mid-1990s, the nonprofit and volunteer Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad Association moved the steam train from Eisenhower Park to an 1887 depot in Old Abilene Town. Soon after, it offered 10-mile excursions to the town of Enterprise.

Locals hope to use the 1919 engine they restored for rail excursions.
