Texas Ranger Sgt. Tim Timberlake had a bad feeling—that an assignment to stop smuggler Encarnacion Delgado would be his last. There were reasons; recently, Delgado had murdered Ranger Joe Shaw, so the outlaw had no qualms about killing.
October 10, 1918. Timberlake and other lawmen (including Ranger legend Frank Hamer) waited for their quarry just below Brownsville. Encarnacion crossed the Rio Grande; ordered to surrender, he got one shot off before being riddled.
But that one bullet ripped through Timberlake’s abdomen; he died the next day. He was buried with honors in Uvalde.
