Southern California did indeed offer up a “frontier of leisure” after the U.S.-Mexican War.
Yet nothing could be so antithetical to sharing this truism as this book by Lawrence Culver. Even the introduction makes Disneyland seem like a dull experiment to capitalize on the region’s history and future. The stories of the pioneers and innovators lack color, empathy and, most shockingly, any semblance of fun. We’re bored to tears. The only enjoyment we got out of this read was seeing Charles Lummis in his cactus mobile.
