chief-washakie-blogThat’s how historian Grace Raymond Hebard described Chief Washakie of the Wyoming Shoshone Tribe. Her excellent biography notes the chief was so respected, a Wyoming army fort as named for him in 1878. Among her insights were that the chief so loved his horse, he refused to blind the right eye for buffalo hunts. Chief Washakie is credited with saving General Crook in the Battle of the Rosebud and was called “friend of emigrant, settler and soldier.”
