It’s one of the most iconic—and perhaps morbid—photos of the Bandit War. Captain Monroe Fox and two other Texas Rangers have lariats around the dead bodies of three Mexicans who were part of a force that attacked the Norias division of the King Ranch on August 8, 1915.
But it’s misleading.
When the bandits attacked, they were fought off by a small group of ranch hands and soldiers. The Rangers didn’t reach the scene until after the battle was over.
