Jim Talbot—real name James Sherman—finally got his. In 1881, he engineered a huge gunfight in Caldwell, KS that killed lawman/mayor Mike Meagher (right in photo). Talbot quickly escaped leaving a trail of violence in his wake as he moved west, avoiding the law at each stop.
In 1895, he was finally tracked down in California, and returned to Kansas for trial. He was acquitted—but justice was yet come.
In August 1896, somebody shotgunned Talbot/Sherman to death. It was reported that Mike Meagher’s twin brother John (left in photo) pulled the trigger, but he was never arrested.
