May 5, 1865. More than a dozen men derail a train near North Bend, Ohio, just northwest of Cincinnati. They rob the passengers and then break open an Adams Express safe, getting US treasury bonds worth $30,000.
Then they escape the way they came—on skiffs across the Ohio River, where they disappear into Kentucky. A military posse goes after them but comes up empty.
It was the first peacetime train holdup in US history. The next one would be 17 months later on the same line, 70 miles west, at Seymour, Indiana.
