Raphael “Red” Lopez killed six men—including five law officers—during a late 1913 rampage outside Salt Lake City. Posses thought they had him trapped in a mine, but he somehow escaped and disappeared into history.
Or not.
Salt Lake County Deputy Sheriff Randy Lish heard about the case in 1998. After an extensive investigation, he found that Lopez was killed in a 1921 Mexican border shootout with Texas Rangers led by the legendary Frank Hamer.
With Lish’s info in hand, officials closed the Lopez case in 2003, 90 years after the shootings.
