The popular image of convicted assassin Tom Horn is of a man who met his fate with courage. Up to and including the time he was hanged on November 20, 1903, accounts say that Horn laughed and joked with his jailers and greeted countless visitors, many of whom brought gifts of food.
But that time behind bars probably was tougher on Horn than he let on. When he was arrested, Horn packed 204 lbs. on his 6’2” frame. When he died, Horn weighed 154 lbs. Executioners didn’t take the weight loss into account; he was nearly decapitated.
