Artesia just might be New Mexico’s best kept secret. Located at the intersection of U.S. Highways 82 and 285, the downtown Arts & Cultural District provides abundant opportunities to experience an array of public art – beginning with the Historic Walking Tour and History In Bronze Collection. Along the Walking Tour, visitors will want to be sure to visit Artesia’s Public Library, which was recently named New Mexico’s most beautiful library. Inside the library, you will see one of our community’s greatest treasures, the Peter Hurd mural entitled “The Future Belongs to Those Who Prepare For It.” The mural was painted directly onto a large wall in a downtown Houston building in 1952. In 2011, the wall itself was rescued from the building which was slated for demolition. See the details of the wall relocation and the beautiful mural, painted by one of the most celebrated artists of the area. The Peter Hurd mural is just one example of the deep traditions and rich culture the artist captured in his artwork, which can be seen around New Mexico. More locations to experience Peter Hurd art can be found on the Arts & Cultural District website. Time a trip around a concert or performance at the Ocotillo Performing Arts Center, making Artesia a nice and relaxing place to stop and stay, while you enjoy your travels around New Mexico. More information about Artesia and links to the Ocotillo Performing Arts Center, Arts & Cultural District and more are available at artesiachamber.com.
