Charles Stevens

Charles Stevens was often cast as Native Americans or Mexicans in movies and television in a career that stretched from 1915 to 1961.  He played the same basic role (a drunken Indian) in two Wyatt Earp movies: 1939’s Frontier Marshall and 1946’s My Darling Clementine.

There were (and are) stories that he was the grandson of Apache leader Geronimo.  Not true. His father was a prominent Anglo Arizona politician. His mother was from Mexico and was not an Indian.  It’s a great story, though, and helped propel Stevens’ career.
