Four injured Civil War veterans meander toward California at war’s end. Without a well-defined protagonist or a clear plot in this book, the reader is left wondering what this story is about.
These four “Lone Rangers” help everybody they come across, including an old woman who needs her porch roof fixed, a boy who has an abusive father, a man about to be lynched and even a mischievous circus elephant. By the time they arrive at the Mississippi river, one Ranger gets his runaway wife back, another is dragged to death by a horse, while a third falls in love with a damsel in distress. This amazing story is easy to read but hard to believe. —Phyllis Morreale-de la Garza
