Bank and train robber Jess Newton was on the lam in Mexico when he decided to compete in the Del Rio, TX rodeo on July 4, 1924. The law was waiting for him.
Former Texas Ranger Harrison Hamer (photo), younger brother of the legendary Frank Hamer and an inspector for the Sheep and Goat Raisers Association, was ready for Newton. The lawman waited until the outlaw was leaving to make the arrest.
Jess spent a year and a day in jail. And the movies made out that Frank Hamer, not Harrison, brought him to justice.
