John Reno of the Reno Gang

Indiana’s Reno Gang had a last hurrah on May 22, 1868.  They held up a train at Marshfield and got away with an estimated $96,000.

But they also left the train messenger dead and other members of the crew hurt.  The law stepped up efforts to catch the outlaws.  So did vigilante groups.

The vigilantes won out.  Within seven months, 10 members of the gang were strung up in various locales—including three Renos.  The only one who got away was John Reno (photo), who was in a Missouri prison when the Marshfield holdup took place.
