  Occidental Hotel :: Buffalo, Wyoming Occidental Hotel was founded in 1879 in a tent on the banks of Clear Creek, at the foot of the Bighorn Mountains in Buffalo, Wyoming, and became a favorite stopping place along the Bozeman Trail. In 1880, a log structure was constructed and hosted many of the most famous people of the Old West. Owen Wister, author of the classic Western novel, The Virginian, frequented the Johnson County area and based his characters on gunslingers and cowboys he’d met i
