Nine Mile Canyon Reprieve
Last August, we told you about some threats to the petroglyphs in eastern Utah’s Nine Mile Canyon. Among the problems: a Bureau of Land Management plan to lease and build natural gas wells in the area.
Good news: It’s not going to happen.
In early February, newly installed Interior Secretary Ken Salazar withdrew the leases on 77 parcels of land in Utah—including around Nine Mile Canyon. “We need to responsibly develop our oil and gas supplies to help us reduce our dependence on foreign oil,” explained Salazar, “but we must do so in a thoughtful and balanced way that allows us to protect our signature landscapes and cultural resources.”
Interior officials plan to re-examine the leasing process. Activist groups argue that under the Bush Administration, the leasing did not comply with environmental and preservation laws.
