Let’s get this straight—author Herda channels Doc, who tells his tale in his own words.

It could be an interesting approach, except the deadly dentist’s voice doesn’t sound like a 19th-century, Georgia born-and-bred sporting man. And Doc’s eternal memory seems to have gone a little haywire: his beloved (?) Kate was not at his bedside when he died with his boots off.  Somewhere, Doc is saying, “This is funny.”
