When New Line pictures was folded into Warner Brothers recently, the fate of several films was left uncertain, including Appaloosa, which is based on Robert Parker’s old school Western novel about a pair of for-hire town tamers. Directed by and starring Ed Harris, the movie, which also features Renee Zellweger and Viggo Mortensen, has at last found a limited release date in mid-September. Many will remember that Harris’s last Western was a very fine made-for-TV version of Zane Grey’s classic Riders of the Purple Sage, but he also provided the narration for Budd Boetticher: A Man Can Do That, the Clint Eastwood-produced documentary that will be included in the upcoming Budd Boetticher DVD box set.
