What makes the graphic novel and comic series Cowboys & Aliens particularly good is the way it unites Apaches and cowboys to fight a supertech society that feels about humans pretty much the same way the palefaces felt about the redskins. It’s clearly a revelation for at least some of the cowpokes to get a glimmer of their own pomposity.
What’s even better is how they learn to wrangle the alien tech without knowing how it works—shoot this, throw that, explode that, a crude approach to stealing the thunder and sending it back. This is good stuff. Apparently Ron Howard feels the same way since he and Brian Grazer have announced plans to turn the series into a movie, though Howard is unlikely to direct it. Dreamworks, Universal, Platinum Studios and other big guns are jumping on the story and bringing in writers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus who made a pretty big impression with Children of Men, and will likely make another with the upcoming Iron Man starring Robert Downey, Jr. Visit drunkduck.com/CowboysAndAliens to read the Cowboys & Aliens graphic novel online.
