At the height of the silver boom in 1887, pharmacist-turned-hotel entrepreneur Henry Strater, with the assistance of his family, built the elegant Strater Hotel in Durango, Colorado. The hotel quickly gained a reputation as one of the most elegant in the West. The Strater Hotel is home to the Durango Melodrama & Vaudeville, Henry Strater Theatre, Diamond Belle Saloon and Mahogany Grille.

The Great Basin and Rocky Mountains region is home to some of the West’s largest national parks, including Yellowstone, Glacier, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain, Zion and Bryce, and some of the West’s most historical mining towns, ranching communities and historic battlefield sites—including Little Big Horn and Big Hole in Montana. Touring by car or RV is the best way to enjoy this vast section of the West, with plenty of scenic highways to choose from in all four states.

When planning a trip to Great Basin and the Rocky Mountains, we recommend contacting the state office of tourism and then checking online or calling ahead directly to the restaurant, saloon or hotel you want to visit to ensure it is open or has a room available when you arrive. And don’t forget to schedule extra travel time—especially during the winter months—to enjoy spontaneous stops in this history-rich region.

The lobby walls of the Parry Lodge in Kanab, Utah, display photos of the many movie stars who’ve stayed there, including Sergeants 3 stars Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. The lodge lacked a swimming pool for after-shoot parties so the actors reportedly paid to have one built.
