An Open & Shut Case

Here’s the good news: In January, Arizona dedicated its $38 million Polly Rosenbaum History and Archives Building in Phoenix. Named after a longtime lawmaker with a special interest in preservation, this 124,000-square-foot facility houses archival material, including items on Wyatt Earp, and a triage room with a blast freezer to eradicate pest infestation and repair water damage from documents.

The bad news: In March, the building was closed to the public. Arizona’s budget shortfall is to blame; officials are trying to shed $1.45 million from the current spending plan. Researchers can still use the facility, by appointment. But for the most part, the archives are shut, at least through the end of the fiscal year on June 30.
