In 1877 Texas, Comanche teenager Young-Man-Listens is captured by a white posse and sold to a traveling circus. After two years of humiliating captivity as a sideshow attraction, Young-Man-Listens is released by a sympathetic 11-year-old white boy. Beginning with an adult storyline, the plot gradually becomes muddled as it turns next into Young Adult and finally into a children’s story. Peppered throughout the text are numerous cartoon illustrations. This story might have been better off targeting one age group of readers.
