One of the tallest men in Arizona territory in the 1880s was Pima County Sheriff Bob Paul. The former stagecoach shotgun messenger had been on the ill-fated Benson stage attacked in November 1880, setting off the events that led to the O.K. Corral gunfight. While most men hovered around 5’7″ or 5’8″, Sheriff Paul stood at a solid 6’4″. Incidentally, Billy the Kid killer Pat Garrett and actors John Wayne and Clint Eastwood all stood at 6’4″. Could their commanding height have something to do with their dominance?
