Daniel Killstraight, a Comanche who studied at Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania, returns home in time to witness the execution of his childhood friend convicted of murdering two white people. Daniel gets a job working as a reservation policeman, and he quietly investigates the murders to find out if his friend was truly guilty. All the white men in the story are cruel and self-serving; all of the Comanches live resentfully in the past. Sadly, Daniel cannot overcome his own bitterness to use his experience and education to help his people move forward in their ever changing world. A great deal of Comanche lore is provided by a writer who has good command of the subject.
