Brazen Hazen

Larry Hazen (sitting, right in 1885) was one of the great law officers of the 1800s—still, you’ve probably never heard of him. But Adams Express, railroads and outlaws certainly knew him.

In 1865, the former Cincinnati police chief investigated the nation’s first peace-time train robbery just outside the Queen City. Three years later, he chased Indiana’s Reno Gang after they pulled a train job that netted $97,000 .

In 1876, Hazen was hired to run down the James-Younger Gang after their Rocky Cut train holdup (and he continued after the disastrous Northfield robbery later that year).
