Scholars of Buffalo Bill Cody continue to uncover the fine details of the scout and showman’s many pursuits. Sandra K. Sagala canvassed newspapers to narrate the span of Cody’s career from his first experience on stage and throughout the duration of the Buffalo Bill Combination. The appendices of character lists and program notes and of cities and dates that the combinations played attest to the author’s diligent research. Dealing chiefly with the period from 1872-86, Sagala has plotted Cody’s learning curve as he managed both the audience and his troupe of actors. His seasoning in the theatre primed him to make his Wild West show a success in later years. Fans of Buffalo Bill and anyone interested in 19th-century theatre will appreciate Buffalo Bill On Stage.
