Chunk Colbert tried to take on the wrong man in Clay Allison. On January 7, 1874 the two men sat down for a friendly meal at the Clifton House in Colfax County, New Mexico.  Chunk nursed a grudge; Allison had beaten up his uncle a few years before.  Colbert went for his gun, but caught it on the table.  Allison took his time and put a bullet in Chunk’s head. Asked about having a meal with Colbert, Clay said, “I didn't want to send a man to hell on an empty stomach.”
