A Song for the Good Times

Myles Keogh was a soldier of fortune, an Irishman who fought for the papal army in Italy and later the Union in the Civil War.

He’s best known for leading Company I of the 7^th Cavalry under Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer—and for dying in heroic fashion at the Little Bighorn. Keogh may have made another contribution to the 7^th. Legend has it that he brought a popular Irish drinking song with him to America, one that Custer adopted as his unit’s theme—Garryowen.
