Call Granville Stuart the gentleman vigilante. He was a prominent rancher, merchant and civic leader in Montana, starting in the early 1860s. He helped found the Montana Historical Society, and Stuart wrote a number of books on Montana history.
In 1884, Stuart and some of his neighbors started a war n rustlers and nesters. The vigilante group called Stuart’s Stranglers shot, lynched or burned up to 20 men. Theodore Roosevelt, who owned a ranch in the region, reportedly asked to join but was turned down. Stuart feared TR would bring too much publicity.
