Things were way out of hand in Cochise County, Arizona Territory in early 1882.  Morgan Earp was assassinated by unknown gunmen while playing pool in Tombstone on March 18.  Wyatt Earp and associates responded by going on the Vendetta Ride, hunting down members of the Cow-boy faction, leaving three dead in their wake before exiting the area in April.

Things got so bad that President Chester Arthur (photo) threatened to send troops to the county to enforce law and order.  He didn’t follow through. But many believe that the violence kept Arizona from gaining statehood until 1912.
