Michno knew this well when he launched into his latest title, The Three Battles of Sand Creek: In Blood, in Court, and as the End of History (Savis Beatie, $29.95). This seasoned author provides a dispassionate discourse on a difficult topic, dissecting it, as the title infers, from multiple perspectives. Drawing on an array of primary sources from court cases to oral histories, he sets forth a well-researched narrative, admitting in the end, and the “utter impossibility of sorting fact from fiction.” Nevertheless, readers should emerge with a clearer understanding of this complex story as recounted by a thoughtful historian.
