The Aztec Land & Cattle Company—better known as the Hashknife Outfit (after a brand it acquired)—became a force in Arizona in the mid 1880s. The company (owned by investors from NYC) eventually controlled more than a million acres and had more than 30,000 head of cattle.
The Hashknife wasn’t popular with everyone, including small ranchers and sheep operations. And some of the Hashknife cowboys got into mischief in the region. But the good times didn’t last. Bad winters in the late 1890s nearly wiped out the Hashknife herds and the operation was sold in 1901.
