Charlie Rich was just 17 when he dealt the cards in a poker game at Nuttall & Mann’s Saloon in Deadwood, Dakota Territory. On August 2, 1876, Rich was sitting in Wild Bill Hickok’s usual seat, with his back against the wall. Hickok asked the teenager to move; Rich refused. We know what happened next.
Family legend says Rich never played poker again. He died in 1929 and was given an elaborate stone in the Miamiville, Ohio cemetery. A relative took it down to make improvements some years ago but it was never replaced.
