Brother Modocs True West Magazine
Surrender of the Modocs.

Old Schonchin was head chief of the Modoc, and he was responsible for moving the tribe to a reservation in southern Oregon in the mid-1860s.  He wanted nothing but peace with the whites—but his younger brother Schonchin John was among those who disagreed.

He and Captain Jack began a destructive insurrection against the US until they were defeated in 1873 (illustration).  Schonchin John was hanged; Old Schonchin was at the execution and told him, “You are no brother of mine…so now die. I cast you away.”
