The James-Younger Gang was on the run after the Northfield robbery debacle, and posses were on the hunt.  One group led by Minneapolis Police Detective Mike Hoy thought the outlaws might hiding out with known criminals.  So they found an ex-con named Dolan—and put him to the hanging torcher, putting a rope around his neck and hauling him up in an effort to get him to talk. But he didn’t.
